Ladies lose at Lincoln
The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphin basketball team hung tough for a quarter before a bigger, stronger, faster Lincoln squad pulled away in the second quarter for a 71-48 win Thursday in a Region 1- 8A Quarterfinal in Tallahassee.
The loss marked the first regional tournament game for the Lady Dolphins (13-7) since 2005.
“Our defense wasn’t as intense as we had played against Tate and Niceville the previous week, but with the distance of the trip we had to make, it’s hard to come out with as much energy as we needed against Lincoln,” first year coach Christy Gray said.
“I’ve always been pleased with the effort my girls put in,” Gray said. “They they fight until the end, and they fight hard.”
The Lady Trojans, who also ended GBHS’ volleyball season, scored buckets on their first three possessions for an early 7-3 lead.
But the Lady Trojans, who improved to 16-8, made six of its next eight shots to make it a 20-12 lead.
Lincoln shot a blistering 59 percent from the field in the first half and led 45-25.
GBHS was outscored by only one (13-12) in the third quarter, which they played almost entirely without point guard Sadie Nix, who took an elbow above the left eye while trying to field an inbounds pass.
Maddie Grace McCurdy closed out a stellar career with 13 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals and six blocked shots.
Another senior, Livi Doerr, scored 12 points (on four 3- pointers), with three steals.
Caleigh Anthony, another seniors, didn’t score, but grabbed five rebounds and had four assists. Mallory Proctor had three rebounds off the bench.
